Savannah

FINALLY catching up on some photos of our recent exchange!
While we were staying in Charleston, we drove a couple hours south to stay for a weekend in lovely Savannah, Georgia. We really liked the town, but unfortunately we didn't have much opportunity to explore. Partly because we were there in the middle of a heat wave. Wow, was it ever HOT!
The other complication was that Tomio, our very own Captain Allergy, was somehow exposed to peanuts at the breakfast buffet, so we needed a trip to the ER.  Fortunately it was all very calm and contained, and his reaction was quickly managed medically. We did have travel insurance, but the final bill hasn't come in yet. (!)

We stopped at a Southern fast food chain along the highway called 'Bojangles'.
This meal was pretty well Johnny's worst nightmare: fried chicken, macaroni and cheese (which in the South they classify as a vegetable), soggy coleslaw with way too much sauce, french fries, and biscuits that tasted like they'd been fried in butter. You can even see how he's holding his hand: he only allowed two fingers to actually touch the food!

The cute little hotel we stayed in. The whole ceiling was skylights, and breakfast was held in the atrium.

My two wee loves. It was so so SO hot that day.

 Old buildings along the riverfront.

Another picture of my and the kids. TWO in one post???

And now the whole family! How often does this happen?

Little troublemaker. He seems to have a knack for knowing JUST how to get in the way.

 Savannah city hall at dusk.

 The Old City Exchange Bell.

Poor Johnny had to find some way to squeeze in with Mr. Tomio, sleeping crossways across the bed.

Souvenir from the hospital visit.  Despite our ER trip, he was in good spirits the whole time.

Bottlenose dolphins live and play off the coast of Savannah. It just so happens that we have a child who is crazy for dolphins, so of course we had to go and see them!

That cute little tongue photobombs an awful lot of my pictures these days.

Oh my boys. Aren't they GORGEOUS?

That there is a real live shrimpin' boat. Too bad I couldn't zoom in close enough to see Forrest Gump.
The dolphins like to follow the shrimp boats for free snacks. So our tour boat followed behind, flying along and creating a big wake. The dolphins love to play the wake of the boat. While I didn't get any photos of them, we saw dozens: jumping and leaping and playing. It was amazing!

We didn't have much time left in Savannah, but the downtown area is so cute and lovely, and well laid-out, with lovely little squares and long majestic boulevards, we wanted to get a sense of the place. So we decided to take a horse-drawn carriage tour.

Love. Her latest thing is horses.

Some scenes from our tour:

That grey plant that covers all the big trees in the South is called Spanish Moss. It's actually neither Spanish nor moss. It's an air plant, which gathers all the sustenance it needs from the air around. It reproduces with spores. At first I thought it looked really messy, but it grew on me (not literally) - - and I came to really love it.

See where that black sign is? That is exactly the place where that famous bus stop bench was in Forrest Gump, where Forrest sat and told his story to other travellers. The bench is now in a museum.  Much of that movie was filmed in Savannah and the area around it.

 Cute rowhouses in downtown Savannah.

I think I could like living in a place with such majestic old trees.
